About

A field guide, not a feed.

Hiss & Whisk exists for one narrow job: helping you feed and read your cat a little better than you did yesterday.

Most of what shapes a cat's health happens quietly, at the bowl, long before anything shows up at a vet visit. Hiss & Whisk is a small, focused library of guides about that quiet part: what to feed, how much, how to switch foods without a mess, and how to notice the early signs that something's off.

What this site is

A collection of plain-language, practically-minded guides on cat nutrition, kitten feeding schedules, food safety, and mealtime behavior. Each guide is written to be read in a few minutes and actually used — not a wall of marketing copy for a particular brand of food.

What this site isn't

It isn't a replacement for your veterinarian. Nothing here is a diagnosis, and nothing here should override advice from a vet who has actually examined your cat and knows its history. Where a symptom or situation sounds like it needs a vet rather than an article, the guides say so directly.

How the guides are written

Each guide sticks to widely accepted, mainstream veterinary and nutritional guidance rather than trends or a single study. Where something is genuinely debated — raw diets, grain-free formulas, specific supplements — the guide says that plainly instead of pretending there's a simple answer.

If a guide ever contradicts something your own vet has told you about your specific cat, follow your vet. General guidance can't account for an individual animal's history, and it isn't meant to try.

The name

A hiss is one of the plainest signals a cat gives you, and a whisk is one of the plainest tools in feeding one — the two ends of what this site is actually about: reading a cat, and getting the bowl right. The whisker line that divides sections throughout the site is a small nod to the same idea.
